Tour Volcanoes of Kamchatka

Start 10.07.2021 – End 24.08.2021

The tour Volcanoes of Kamchatka lasts 11 days and offers an interesting program with the ascent
of Plosky Tolbachik volcanoes, cones of the North Breach, Mutnovsky, and Gorely where you
can see the active crater and other processes common to breathing volcanoes.
Throughout the tour, you can observe the consequences of the Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption, which occurred in the 70s of the last century: the caves, the dead forest, and frozen lava. The recent eruptions of 2012–2013 contributed to the landscape change, as well.
Among the impressive natural sites that you visit, there are three waterfalls, each is remarkable in its specific way. The Pacific Ring of Fire, which includes Kamchatka, implies great volcanic and seismic activity. It changes the appearance of the peninsula, so when visiting the same place at different times, you can notice changes in the landscape.
On the territory of the Tolbachik volcano, we will stay at a comfortable glamping with beds. And in the evening, for a dinner we will all get together in a large glamping canteen, where a view of volcanoes and Dead forest will open before us.
Necessary information
You will not carry heavy backpacks. We move by the cars, and it is enough to carry a few things with you when trekking. The group spends most nights in tents in the open air, several nights in Paratunka hotel (breakfasts are included).
All fees for visiting paid areas are included in the tour price, as well as hotel accommodation and meals during trekking. Guide and cook accompany the group. However, when you have lunch and dine in cafes in Milkovo and in hotels a la carte you pay for it. In addition, you should see about insurance and pay for it. This is a must for any tour in Kamchatka.
The success of the hiking depends largely on the outfit that you choose. Since you have to walk a lot in the highlands, you should wear trekking boots. Jacket (with hood, membrane) and pants should be waterproof and wind-resistant. Thermal underwear is required. If it rains, you should have a raincoat-poncho, and to keep your body warm — a fleece jacket. The head should be protected, there are gloves on your hands.
You should take with you:

  • a 60-liter backpack (at a minimum), you will not carry it on yourself, as well as an insert
for dry clothes and sleeping bags,
  • a small backpack, which you need when trekking,
  • sleeping bag,
  • sunglasses,
  • face cream,
  • mosquito nets and repellents,
  • torch,
  • individual first aid kit,
  • bathing accessories.
    Day 1
Arrival to Kamchatka. The guide meets tourists at the airport and delivers by car to the recreation center in Paratunka. You find accommodation in a comfortable hotel with all the amenities. On the territory of the center, there is a dining room and a restaurant, as well as a swimming pool with thermal water. If you arrive before 1 p.m., we offer an excursion to PetropavlovskKamchatsky and to the shore of the Pacific Ocean.
    Day 2
The beginning of the meaningful part of the tour is connected with the road to the Klyuchevskaya Volcano Group. It is located in the north of Kamchatka; it takes you a few hours to get there. The part of the way runs on gravel, and at the last kilometers — across the country.
Cars wade through small rivers several times. This is a real adventure in the wild. Having left Paratunka early in the morning, the group gets to the area of the Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption only in the evening.
The last part of the journey takes place in the mountains, cars rise to a height of more than a thousand meters above sea level — you will take a rest in the camp “Claw” is located. Opening views smooth the road, and you forget the fatigue. Outside the car window, you can see frozen lava and growing cones of new volcanoes. Within this day, you will have lunch in the dining room in Milkovo and have a snack several times during stops. Overnight in a warm glamping.
    Day 3
The day is dedicated to climbing Plosky Tolbachik stratovolcano, which is the part of an array formed as a result of the merging of two stratovolcanoes on the site of a former shield volcano. One of them, Ostry Tolbachik, is already extinct, and Plosky is acting. The ascent is not the most difficult in comparison with other tours in Kamchatka.
Special mountaineering equipment is not required. However, you’d better have certain physical conditioning. The top of Plosky Tolbachik is above 3000 meters above sea level. The grade is easy, there are no strongly steep sections. Difficulties may arise from the stony-sandy covering of the slopes, so it is important to have proper boots on and leggings that will save your feet from the sand and small pebbles. Tourists take a small backpack with a minimum of necessary things.
While climbing up, you overcome 20 km. It takes 6-8 hours, depending on the pace. The descent is faster for a couple of hours. While climbing, you pass by the layers of lava and see traces of fallen volcanic bombs. From above, an amazing sight opens — a valley covered with a layer of ash after a powerful volcanic eruption and new cones.
The last section before the summit is the steepest, and having overcome it, travelers face a huge crater, the diameter of which has increased more than five times, up to 1700 meters, after the eruption. In the evening, the group returns to the camp and have a hot dinner.
    Day 4
This day is devoted to the North and South Breaches (Northern and Southern Breakthrough), formed in the mid-70s of the twentieth century as a result of the fissure eruption. The cataclysm led to the formation of seven new structures. These cinder cones are called the Northern Breakthrough. After having climbed to a small height, tourists admire Tolbachinsky Dol, an amazing picture of volcanic activity. The cones stand in a row, forming a chain.
The ascent of another cone let you admire a variety of rocks. They are different colors, up to bright red; you cannot pick up some stones, so hot are they. At the Southern Breakthrough, the eruption was less powerful, so its effects did not cause the active construction of new cones, but lava caves formed. There is also an impressive dead forest, a scorched area where all the plants died. Now, you can see that life takes its course, and new greenery begins to grow. In the evening, you return to camp and have dinner.
    Day 5
We continue trekking along Plosky Tolbachik. This time you visit the place where the consequences of the 2012-2013’s eruption are obvious. This recent natural cataclysm has led to the ejection of large amounts of ash into the atmosphere. There was a lot of smoke, as well. An abundant lava flow is common for fissure eruptions (as it was). As a result, spectacular lava rivers were formed; they now froze but in some places still kept warm.
The landscape here is really fantastic. The existence of such a place on Earth seems unreal, you even think about the cosmic landscape. The eruption has formed new cones and large caves, certainly inspected by tourists. There are many objects for futuristic pictures. Full of impressions, tourists return to the “Claw”, the cook has already prepared dinner for them.
    Day 6
The group spends almost the whole day on the road, making short stops. You return to Paratunka by car. The journey takes almost the whole day and, in the evening, you are already at the hotel.
    Day 7
After the tremendous impressions received in the first six days, and before going to the Southern Volcano Group, you need to take a little breath. This is a day of rest. However, if you are eager for further adventures and new impressions you can choose one of the optional excursions and visit such amazing places as the Valley of Geysers, the outskirts of the Kurile Lake, the Russkaya Bay, etc.
    Day 8
It is a very busy day. Tourists travel by car to the Southern Volcano Group, pass the Vilyuchinsky Pass, the ascent of Mutnovsky volcano crater, admire the waterfall at Opasniy Canyon and spend the night in tents. The distance to the Southern Group is short, 90 km, but there is no usual straight road. Therefore, travel time is 4-5 hours. Having reached the Vilyuchinsky Pass, the cars stop and you have a unique opportunity to observe the amazing panorama of the volcano and the valley from the viewing point.
Having reached the foot of Mutnovsky volcano, after a short rest, the tourists start ascent following by volcanic activity. You can see boiling mud pots, fumaroles, and colorful ice sliding down the crater wall. Be careful, listen to the guide and follow the proven path. In the crater wall, there is a rift — it is the most convenient place to climb up. From the summit of the volcano, the Vulkannaya River flows rapidly forming impressive waterfalls on steep slopes. The waterfall of the Opasniy Canyon looks very impressive, you can admire the magnificent sight on the way back. After the descent, you take a rest, have dinner, and spend the night in tents.
    Day 9
This day is devoted to Gorely volcano. Its ascent is not difficult and passes between the slag fields and frozen lava flows. Gorely has several cones and a dozen craters. Two of them are the most interesting for tourists: Active and Blue Lake. The first one warrants its name without ceasing its volcanic activity. And the second one keeps up as well, revealing an amazingly beautiful lake at its bottom to the gaze of amazed tourists.
Tourists walk along the edges of these craters, marveling at the geological richness of their structure and admiring the opening views. The descent is faster than the ascent. Having returned to the camp, travelers have dinner, rest and sleep in tents.
    Day 10
It is impossible to leave Gorely volcano without visiting its caves. This day is devoted to caves and the Snezhny (Snowy) and Medvezhy (Bear) Waterfalls. The rock caves of Gorely are so beautiful that they look like a temple or a concert hall. It is easy to imagine here musicians with instruments to give a concert of classical music. The acoustics are simply amazing. It is a pity that it is impossible to practice this at least once a season. Waterfalls made by melting ice leave a lasting impression, as well. Having admired these natural sights, tourists return by car to Paratunka where they spend the night at the hotel.
    Day 11
End of the tour. Transfer to the airport, farewell. You, full of impressions, are leaving home. Those who want to stay in Kamchatka for a few more days can book day trips to see other beautiful places of our amazing peninsula.
