A Detailed Description of the Tour “Travel Easy to Kamchatka”
Day 1. Arrival at the Airport of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky
Meeting with a guide at the airport. Transfer to the hotel. Visiting Khalaktyrsky Beach for tourists that arrive until 1 p.m.
When approaching Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, aircraft passengers have an opportunity to admire the beauty of Kamchatka land from above. In clear weather, numerous mountain ranges are visible, among which a group of “home volcanoes” clearly stands out. At the airport, the member of our company with a KamchatkaLand sign greets travelers. He takes guests to Petropavlovsk Hotel where they will stay throughout the tour.
An exciting excursion to Khalaktyrsky Beach awaits those who arrived on an early flight before 1 p.m. To visit the place after a long journey means to get a second wind and excellent relaxation. The beach is not far from the city, the road is not tiring. Once in place, tourists experience a pleasant surprise. The sand on the beach is black. It is formed by volcanic rock. The process of formation of such a beach is associated with numerous eruptions of Avachinsky and Kozelsky volcanoes when spilled lava reached the Pacific coast. Run by glaciers, split by water and wind, the lava rock formed the unique black sands of Khalaktyrsky Beach, which stretches for 32 kilometers.
There is a visitor center on the beach. The building resembles a tent in its shape. It hosts exhibitions, lectures, there are information stands about the wildlife of Kamchatka, a souvenir shop. To make it more convenient for people to walk without being stuck in the sand, wooden floorings are made. There are benches, you can enjoy the view while sitting there. A visit to Khalaktyrsky Beach gives the soul the true peace. A laconic meditative landscape, ocean air, each breath of which fills you with force — all this creates an unforgettable atmosphere. In summer, people surf here, and the sight of surfers flying along the waves adds color to Khalaktyrsky Beach.
Tourists arriving in the afternoon will have a rest at the hotel.
Day 2. Visit Vilyuchinsky Volcano, Ascending the Waterfall
You can see Vilyuchinsky volcano right from the center of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. It is located on the other side of Avacha Bay about fifty kilometers from the city and looks very impressive since its cone has a classically regular shape. The second day of the tour is dedicated to acquaintance with the magnificent volcano. In the morning after breakfast, the group begins the journey to its foot.
An auto road leads to Vilyuchinsky pass. When the bus rides along the serpentine, passengers may have a bit of earplug, as in an airplane. The views are fascinating, though. Vilyuchinsky volcano last erupted about 10 thousand years ago and has since been no longer active. Therefore, its shape is not deformed, and glaciers are located at the top. The volcano attracts at any time of the year. In winter, there are good conditions for snow sports. In summer, Vilyuchinsky attracts tourists with the beauty of the views opening from its pass.
The viewing platform is equipped so that travelers can conveniently view the entire magnificent panorama of the Vilyuchinsky volcano. There are benches, information stands to introduce the plants of Kamchatka Krai. Wooden totemic figures of idols harmoniously fit into the surrounding landscape. Sculptures give the area a peculiar flavor. In all its glory, Vilyuchinsky volcano is visible, its height is almost 2,200 meters. Barrancos scatter from its top to the foot, forming a unique relief. Not far from it, there are volcanoes Gorely and Mutnovsky, each of which makes a stunning impression. When you see the whole group at once, it looks just fantastic.
After admiring the open spaces, you will go down to the foot and begin an easy walking ascent to the waterfall. Alder elfin wood surrounds the first part of the path, and then the path goes along stones and snowfields. Depending on the speed of movement, the path to the waterfall takes from one to two hours. The snowfields and glaciers caused the formation of mountain streams. They merge into a single stream, falling down from steep slopes and forming a waterfall. Tourists ascend it to admire the majestic spectacle of a turbulent stream, plunging from a 40-meter height into the abyss. After having enjoyed the inspiring sight, the group descends to the foot. This path takes much less time than climbing. By evening, tourists return to the hotel.
Day 3. A Trip to the Foot of Avachinsky and Koryaksky Volcanoes
The guide picks up the participants of the tour at nine in the morning. The first 30 kilometers a car with tourists goes along the Paratunka-Yelizovo highway, then it turns off and heads towards Nalychevo Natural Park. The road there goes along the channel of the Dry River. On the border of the park, you need to go through the barrier. Behind it, the protected area begins. The opening landscape fascinates with its mighty beauty.
As you approach Avachinsky volcano, you will more and more be imbued with a sense of involvement in a truly majestic natural phenomenon. At the foot of the giant, the foot part of the tour replaces the automobile one. Here tourists walk and enjoy the views. Avachinskaya Sopka is clearly visible from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. This is an active volcano, and you can feel the living breath of the earth especially sharp near it. The height of Avachinsky exceeds 2,700 meters above sea level. By its nature, it belongs to the type of Somma-Vesuvius volcanoes. That is, long ago in this place, there was a huge volcano, which experienced a powerful eruption. Because of this cataclysm, the top was demolished, an annular shaft was formed. A new cone began to grow inside this ring. Such is Avachinsky volcano. You can climb it, though not during this excursion.
Now another, no less interesting climbing is awaiting tourists — ascent the extrusion located between Avachinsky and Koryaksky volcanoes, Mount Camel. It got its name due to similarity with this animal, its two peaks. Another name for the mountain is Two-humped Rock. Its height is 1,200 meters above sea level. Mount Camel was formed during the Late Pleistocene and in the Holocene because of the superposition of liquid lavas that flowed out during the eruptions of the neighboring Koryaksky volcano. Some experts believe that Avachinsky also provided material for the growth of the mountain. This phenomenon is called extrusion. Similar mountains are located at the volcanic foundations at the place of their transition to construction.
Both peaks of Camel are rocky formations that covered with grass and flowers; there are many rhododendrons. Small animals live on the mountain. The Tarbagan marmot is especially noticeable, and its characteristic feature is a spot on the head that resembles a black cap. Climbing goes on a paved trail and is not particularly difficult; moreover, it does not require much time. This fact attracts people to the excursion since no special climbing preparation is necessary to conquer the peak of Camel.
Once on one of his “humps”, travelers will be astonished. The opening panorama is just fantastic. From here, in the immediate vicinity, visible two giant volcanoes are — Avachinsky and Koryaksky. In good weather, Zhupanovsky Volcano, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky can be seen, and the city of Yelizovo is also visible. You will have a lifetime experience. It will be difficult to forget this day, which gave a magnificent natural spectacle. In the evening, the group returns to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
Day 4. Excursion to Vachkazhets Massif and its Waterfalls. Lake Takhkoloch
In the morning, after breakfast, the group travels to Vachkazhets massif. It is located about 80 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in a westerly direction. This is a very beautiful place; it is located in a protected area. Having reached the border of the natural park, tourists go further on foot. In the process of this leisurely trekking, you can admire the surroundings, inhaling the pure Kamchatka air with your full chest. The distance to the foot of Vachkazhets is 7 kilometers. Here is a beautiful lake Takhkoloch. On its shore, the group makes a stop.
The lake is often snowy, and only by June the snow melts, and bright flowers grow near the reservoir. The surrounding landscape is reflected in the calm expanse of water as in a mirror. Takhkoloch receives its water from mountain sources, so the water here is clean and cold. The Klyuchevaya and River flow into the lake, and Takhkoloch River flows out and then connects with the Plotnikova River, which carries its waters to the Sea of Okhotsk. The outlines of the lake resemble either a bear’s face or a heart. Both are symbolic and reflects the essence of Kamchatka. After all, the bears here are the original hosts, and the hearts of many, many people remain in this land since it is impossible not to love it.
A moment of rest and an easy ascent begins. The mountain range is actually an extinct ancient volcano. After a powerful eruption, it was divided into three parts. Its height is small, but the views are very picturesque. The local landscape resembles an alpine one; there are many plants, among which brightly blooming rhododendrons stand out. The area is also interesting because rare minerals have been preserved here. For example, you can find quartz with opal.
The purpose of ascending Vachkazhets is to visit a beautiful natural phenomenon, a waterfall. Vachkazhets waterfalls owe their existence to the river flowing from the glacier and the steep slopes of the volcano. On the way to the lake, located at the foot, the water stream several times falls from the steep cliffs, forming cascades. Tourists come very close to a beautiful waterfall. After rest, you will find a way to another natural attraction, the ancient circus. Now you can observe deposits of ancient rocks and cute animals scurrying between them – arctic ground squirrels. Near the circus, the group makes a halt.
After the rest, tourists will be back. The descent is carried out on a different route and passes quickly. The road is very beautiful, accompanied by the sound of water, as here you can see several small waterfalls. Dinner awaits you at the car and the group moves to the Zelenovsky Lakes thermal complex to relax in the hot hydrogen sulfide springs. In the evening, tourists return to the hotel.
Day 5. Sea Tour of Avacha Bay
Three Brothers Rocks. Exit to the bay. A visit to Starichkov Island.
An exciting boat trip awaits travelers that day. After breakfast, they go to the sea passenger port of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, where a tour of Avacha Bay begins. This is one of the largest bays in the world. It is actively used for shipping and household purposes. The Avacha and Paratunka rivers flow into Avacha Bay, and the banks are pitted with small picturesque bays. The guide tells about the history of the discovery of the bay, about various events that are associated with this reservoir. Russian sailors first entered these waters in 1703. In 1740, the boat “Holy Archangel Gabriel” entered Avacha Bay guided by navigator Ivan Yelagin, and the Russian history of this place began. The ship’s team began the construction of the burg on the shore of the bay. When the boats “Saint Apostle Peter” and “Saint Apostle Paul”, which were led by Alexei Chirikov and Vitus Bering, arrived here, the built houses were already waiting for them. The settlement was called Peter and Paul (Petropavlovskaya) Harbor.
The depth of the bay (on average 9 meters) allows vessels with different displacement to enter here. It is very convenient for shipping. The shores are mostly sheer, which always amazes tourists who admire them. The bay has a rich fauna. There is a lot fish, many birds live on the islands, and there are rookeries. The boat moves to the exit to the bay, and at the very border, travelers see three kekur standing nearby. These vertical cliffs are called Three Brothers. They will not escape your attention as they stand like guards at the entrance to the bay and naturally became its symbol. These basalt cliffs are located three hundred meters from the coast and are a
protected natural monument. Around the rocks, there is an active current, so you can admire them only from a certain distance. Interestingly, in the underwater part of kekur, there is a small cave located at a depth of 13 meters. There is a beautiful legend connected with Three Brothers Rocks, explaining their name and location. The guide will certainly tell you the legend when the boat passes by the rocks.
Having stepped into the waters of the bay, the ship approaches Starichkov Island. The emphasis is on the first syllable. The island got its name thanks to the ancient auklets (starik in Russain) that inhabit the island; they struck the sailors who arrived here in the XVIII century due to their multiplicity. In addition to this species of birds, many other birds live on the island. Together, they form an impressive seashore colony of birds, which is interesting to watch. The island has navigational significance, as well, because it is located very conveniently for seafaring purposes. At the highest point of Starichkov Island, there is a navigation sign. It is difficult to approach the island because of strong currents, and you should not disturb its inhabitants. However, you can watch the birds from a distance. In addition, pinnipeds live here, it is interesting to see them, as well.
Near the island, in calm waters, fishing is awaiting tourists. The divers dive here to get the true delicacy — sea urchins. The cook will prepare them for guests. Having rested and admired the ocean views, the group returns to the shore and spends the night in the hotel.
Day 6. Ethnographic Program
Kamchatka tour would not be complete without acquaintance with the culture of local peoples, from time immemorial, inhabiting the peninsula. Itelmen, Koryak, Chukchi and other nationalities lived here long before the arrival of the Russians. In their folklore and myths, an ancient understanding of the structure of the world has been preserved, you can see the close connection of these people with the nature of their native land in their works of art. Since ancient times, the main means of transportation of indigenous peoples was a dog team. Through natural selection, a special breed of sled dogs appeared. Although dog sledding is almost never used in everyday life, dog races exist as an ethnic sport that is popular in different countries.
The Semashkin family keeps a kennel of sports sled dogs, and the tour program includes a visit to this place. Every year, a large sports festival is held in Kamchatka, the heart of which is dog sled racing Beringia. The Semashkin family with their pets repeatedly became the winners of the competitions. Tourists are acquainted with the peculiarities of the riding breed, with the conditions for keeping dogs and get a new experience in managing a dog sled. Here you can see firsthand the yaranga (a skin tent), household items of the indigenous people, and learn about its history and traditions. An ethnographic ensemble performs with songs and dances. A pleasant end to an interesting day is a tasting of national cuisine.
Day 7. Visit the Fish Market. Airport Transfer. Departure
The last day of the tour provides an opportunity not only to prepare for departure but also to visit the fish market. It is well known that Kamchatka is rich in marine gifts. Especially there are many salmon fish. When visiting a market with a huge selection of fish, seafood, and caviar, tourists can buy and take delicious souvenirs home. After that, the group makes a transfer to the airport. On the way, there is a stop at the monument “Russia begins here” to take a united photo in memory of Kamchatka and a wonderful journey around this region.
When going to Kamchatka, we should remember that this is a region with a rather harsh climate. Even in summer, it is cool here, the winds constantly blow, it often rains and it is damp. Therefore, it is necessary to bring woolen and fleece clothes, thermal underwear. Taking into account trekking, you need to have comfortable, waterproof, worn shoes. It is better to wear trekking boots when traveling. In addition to them, it is recommended to take lighter shoes for those cases when you do not need to make a hiking trip.
A waterproof jacket with a hood is suitable as outerwear. There should be a hat on the head, gloves on the hands. In windy weather, the skin requires special care, so a face cream, hygienic lipstick are necessary. You must also have a mosquito repellent. Since the tour includes trips in the mountains and on water, antinaupathic drug will be useful. To store personal items during excursions, you need to take a small light backpack, where, among other things, there should be an individual first-aid kit.
